Base isolation, also known as seismic base isolation, is one of the most popular means of protecting a structure against earthquake forces. Seismic Isolation is the technology that reduces the seismic force by isolation devices installed between the building and the ground, or in the middle floors of the building.

Seismic Isolation Retrofitting

Retrofit refers to the significant improvement of inherent performance and functions while maintaining its original form and composition.

Seismic Isolation Retrofit is the new earthquake-proof reinforcement for existing important structures by installing isolation devices into them. The procedure is as follows; 

 - Excavating the ground soil under the building, and driving the temporary piles that support the building. 
 - Separating the building from the foundation, and casting basement slab. 
 - Installing seismic isolation devices under the building, cutting off the temporary piles, and reconnecting the building with the foundation through the isolation devices to complete

Seismic Isolation Retrofitting Experience in Armenia

During a short period of time in 1995‐1996, devoting himself to the challenge of increasing earthquake resistance of existing buildings, Prof. Mikayel G. Melkumyan developed two unique methods of protecting existing buildings from earthquakes through base isolation and isolated the upper floors without interrupting exploitation of the buildings.
